Your Tear Film & Dry Eye

Your eyes need tears to stay healthy. Your tear film is a layer of tears covering the surface of your eyes that protects against infections and provides nutrients. It is made of 3 layers

  • The oily outer layer
  • The watery middle layer
  • The inner mucus layer

When there’s an issue with any of the layers, you can develop dry eye and inflammation. Often, these problems are also caused by meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD).

Understanding MGD

Meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD) is a chronic and progressive condition that affects the function of the tiny meibomian glands that line your eyelids. These glands produce the tear film’s oily layer, which is essential for preventing your tears from evaporating too quickly.

The common symptoms of MGD overlap with the common symptoms of dry eye disease. In fact, it is 1 of the most common underlying causes of dry eyes.

Our Dry Eye Diagnostics

To accurately diagnose and treat dry eye, we implement a variety of diagnostic tests, including:

  • Meibography: A technique to assess the function of the meibomian glands.
  • Dyes & staining: Tests to evaluate tear film quality and identify areas of dryness.
  • Subjective tear break-up time (TBUT) testing: A test to measure how long tears remain on the eye’s surface before breaking up.
  • Schirmer’s test: A test to measure tear production.
  • Oculus Keratograph 5M: A diagnostic tool to assess tear film quality.

Our Dry Eye Treatments

Dry eye disease can affect anyone, regardless of age, personal health, or race. However, certain factors can increase your risk of developing this condition, including:

  • Spending a lot of time using digital screens
  • Wearing contact lenses without proper care
  • Using eye makeup daily

Environmental factors, such as dry air and smoke, also play a role in the development of dry eye disease.

We offer a comprehensive array of treatments designed to help manage and alleviate the discomfort of dry eyes. Each treatment is tailored to address specific aspects of dry eye syndrome, providing a personalized approach to your eye health.

IPL Therapy

IPL therapy uses controlled pulses of light to target inflammation and improve the quality of tears. This noninvasive procedure can address the underlying issues contributing to dry eyes, such as meibomian gland dysfunction.

The benefits of IPL can include:

  • Reduced inflammation
  • Improved tear quality
  • Increased eye comfort

MDelite iProX is a minimally invasive treatment that uses radiofrequency energy to gently stimulate the meibomian glands and enhance tear production.

Radiofrequency treatments can reduce inflammation, improve gland function, and increase tear production.

Punctal plugs are small silicone devices inserted into the tear ducts to decrease tear drainage. By blocking the outflow of tears, these plugs help retain moisture on the surface of the eye and can provide lasting relief from dry eye symptoms.

We can prescribe a range of medicated eye drops. These prescription drops can help increase tear production and reduce inflammation that can exacerbate dry eye symptoms.

Common eye drops include Miebo, Xiidra, Tyrvaya, Restasis, Upneeq, and Lumify.

This manual technique involves applying gentle pressure to the eyelids to express the oils from the meibomian glands. Meibomian gland expression can help unclog blocked glands, improve tear quality, and alleviate symptoms of dry eye.

BlephEx is an eyelid-cleaning treatment that removes debris and biofilm from your lash line. A clean eyelid can help promote a healthy tear film and prevent inflammation that can lead to dry eyes.

BlephEx goes beyond simple cleaning wipes. This in-office treatment uses a gentle brush to remove debris, promoting healthy gland function and tear production.

Our Dry Eye Products

To complement our treatment options, we also offer a variety of dry eye products, including:

  • Lunovus eyelid wipes: Gentle wipes designed to remove debris from the eyelid margins.
